    Checking out

Advised rooms were not available on arrival in spite of having a confirmed booking Asked if some of my party could relocate to another hotel Damp old fashioned rooms One room had broken glass window which was being held together by tape !!!!! Staff appeared under undue stress and were harrassed I could go on and on .........

"I cannot understand how you ptropose such a terrible place" (107125474)

Absolutely not a single one; I did not accept the room

Terrible kitchen smell all over the place; horrible room in the third floor without lift ; I had to carry all my luggages up and down (as I could not accept a small single room as a double)

"Very Poor.Perfect location & prime spot in town It should be a flag ship hotel .As it was we were embarassed to think that the foreign visitors at the hotel might consider this to be a reflection on all accommodation & what the British find acceptable. It is not.We stayed in some fantastic places in Scotland but this hotel let everyone down." (108071605)

The Duty Manager was polite in dealing with our complaints. There were several people making complaints & she kept calm & was polite. She also came to inspect the rooms so could see for herself what was wrong.

Bathroom dirty-debris from previous guests & large cobwebs. Bed old & uncomfortable Wallpaper grubby Tablecloth at breakfast dirty Cereal stale Orange juice off Carpet in public areas threadbare In morning clean sheets & towels were left on floor in corridor. They were not left on trolleys nor were they packed in plastic.Corridors were narrow so inevitably they were trodden on . A bathroom in one of our rooms had broken toilet seat & ripped lino on the floor

"Verry poor standards of houskeeping, my bedding and towels were not changed in the three days i was there, breakfast was the basic frozen links, bacon and eggs presented in the most unapatizing way. Finally the water supply needs to be checked, the colour was down right muddy and while this may not mean that it is unfit for use it is still unacceptable." (108068715)

    Good location,Large dinning room

Poor housekeeping and breakfast, (This is a Scottish hotel why advertise an English breakfast?) Hotel bar shuts at 11 o'clock even for residents, No telephone in the room .Discoloured water from the taps.

"Room we were in could do with decorating and a good clean" (108063311)

    Close to Ullapool ferry

As a bed and breakfast guest we were not allowed to book into the dining room until 8pm after traveling on motorbikes all day we were exhausted and wanted a meal. We had to go out and find a restaurant even though the restaurant in the hotel was nearly empty.

    "O.K." (97793271)

The shower curtain was torn at top to keep it in shower. Plus could not figure out the shower knobs & almost flooded the tub.

"Hotel centrally located good base for touring. Staff pleasant and helpful, Ample breakfast (self service)." (97809685)

Room very small and in need of redecoration. Where ever you walked in the room the floor boards squeeked!!!!

  • 3/10 Alastair (Mature couple)

"Nothing more to say really. The rooms need modernising and to step into the 21st century." (97602386)

The room required redecoration and the furniture was cheap and dated. The bar in the main hotel was closed so had to go through to the bar next door. Entertainment was early evening and lasted about 90 mins. ( singer with a guitar). The reception area gave a false impression of luxury, soon to be corrected. The breakfast was self service, limited and cheap produce.

"I am expressing my detailed concerns in a letter. I think it would be helpful to explain to people on arrival, that Ullapool, in low season, is effectively shut after 9pm." (97399303)

The staff were friendly and polite.

Several features: poor shower facility; loud noise from the kitchen fan.

"The accomodation was clean and comfortable. some of the furishings were a bit tired. The evening meals were excellent with a good choice from a fixed menu. Different menu each night. The service, presentation, taste, etc were all good." (97647807)

The evening meals were excellent in value, presentation and taste

Had a few problems with the shower

would be nice to have a bit of entertainment

  • 7/10 Patricia (Mature couple)

from Bridge of earn , GB on  May 30, 2007

"The room, overlooking the car park was a bit tired and in need of refurbishment. Replacement, double glazed windows would not be too expensive. A cloth, with a bit of abrasive cleaner, twisted round the sink drainhole a few times, would produce a silvery, shiny result instead of green and dirty and the guest would immediately think this is clean As stated above, the bed linen was very crisp and clean and that is a bit plus. Facilities in the room were adequate. We felt that dinner at £17.50 per head was barely value for money. On the night we ate, 2 of the main courses were overcooked and dry and the roast potatoes were almost inedible, being watery and tasteless. Breakfast was perfectly adequate and better cooked that dinner. The staff were quietly pleasant and hard working." (99317712)

Beds were comfortable and bed linen very crisp and clean. Overlooking car park and could keep eye on car.

Sink drainhole could have been cleaner and carpet better vacuumed. Extraction fan in bathroom not working.

"Overall, reasonable value for the area and well located. Pity the hand pump in the bar wasn't dispensing anything; but there was a good range of malts." (99261477)

Excellent room vith a fantastic view and good quality and range of food.

Staff in restuarant and bar were a bit disorganised. There were plenty of them (and very pleasant), but not necessarily being used effectively.

    view over the harbour

to noisy due to the smokers outside the bar (our room has been above the entrance of the bar)

  • 5/10 Carol (Solo leisure traveller)

from Edinburgh , GB on  May 14, 2007

"The Caledonian basks in the reflected glory of its former days. The quality of the rooms does not merit the rates charged. The furniture is poor, badly laid out and the decor would not be out of place in a 1980's motorway motel. If only the rest of the accomodation matched the decor, quality and value of the restaurant, it would be a west highland hotel worthy of its surroundings. The Caledonian needs to raise its sights and standards above that which perhaps coach party guests will accept." (99577049)

restuarant was very good, staff helpful, food delicious.

felt the cost has too high for the quaility of the room . This is my 3rd stay here and my view has been consistent on each occassion. I have stayed in local guest houses that charge more , but the overall quality of the experience is far higher.

Good location, room had an excellent view, it was spacious.

    It was simple basic accommadation.

  • 7/10 Margaret (Mature couple)

It was noisy the mattresses on the beds were worn out and the breakfast was finished too early at 9am as we were on a break away we would have liked to have had our breakfast a bit later in the morning.

  • 8/10 Ian (Mature couple)

    comfortable old hotel

  • 2/10 Philomena (Mature couple)

    from Darlington , United Kingdom;GB on  August 9, 2005

"On arrival at approximately 11:30 we were told our room would not be ready until 3pm - even though we had been travelling for hours and it was pouring with rain we were not offered a coffee or asked if we would like to wait - we had to wander around in the rain - then at 3pm the room was still not ready. For a rate of £95 we expected something nice instead we were faced with something akin to your worst B&B of the 1970's. Dated furniture, grubby furnishings - generally a very tired feel - even the water was discoloured - externally the Hotel looks very imposing but internally (bedrooms) it needs some TLC. There was also noise from the ferry terminal having its concrete pillars demolished with work starting at 7am and not finishing until 8pm (approx) the night we stayed there." (1914093)

    Nothing.

Flexibility on Room check-ins. Quality of Rooms Lift

"The hotel had just changed hands but our stay was a bit disappointing" (2454325)

    Adequate but no frills. Clean.

Restaurant at breakfast time was a shambles. Bar service also very slow.

  • 5/10 William (Other)

    from Kirkcaldy , United Kingdom;GB on  July 3, 2005

"My wife and I have difficulty in managing stairs especially with luggage. No offer was made to help us. We were not allowed access to the main hotel facilities for an evening meal that night. The explanition was the dining area was given over exclusively to bus parties. Access to the hotel was made difficult due to the limited parking facilities." (2449398)

    Proximity to the ferry.

    Staff attitude.
