Size of the bed was excellent. The bar was a lovely area. The closeness to the city centre.
The breakfast is not worth the money. The service at breakfast was poor.Cost of the drinks in the bar is excessive even for a 4 star hotel. The noise of trains on the sunday night/ monday morning was mad, every 5 mins didn't sleep much.

near railway ststion, within easy walking distance of city centre.staff very obliging.room layout was good, grounds were fab and facilaties were of high standard

"The hotel needs to stop just concentrating on throughput and making money and try to think/act intelligently about the guests. If you are going to hold loud parties till 01.30 then you shouldn't let out the rooms just below them!" (97752022)
It is a fine old building and the room was large for a single occupancy
Being kept awake till 01.30 by a party almost directly above my room, the broadband in the room not working and the waitress forgetting to bring me the drinks that I ordere at my meal. Also when I reported the problem with the Boradban nobody seemed to know what to so I was told three time to ring reception and each time they were just as surprised/confused as the first time. Similalry when I commented about being kept awake half the night reception said fill in a commnets form, whihc is ridiculous as I ahd aleady made the comment to them verbally. So I filled in the form and now this one arrives as well - so I am filling it in.

Nice traditional hotel, clean, friendly staff. Nice gardens and a lovely view of York Minster from our room. Minutes walking distance from centre of town
Room was a bit small with tiny bathroom but clean. Bed sunken in the middle. Buffet breakfast OK but not great. Had to pay for parking in the hotel.

"Excellent" (99665809)
Great spacious room. Swimming pool, and bar facilities excellent.
Car Parking was difficult, as lack of spaces. Didn't have breakfast, as think £28 for two cooked breafasts is overpriced

I liked the room, the bath facillities, the fabulous view of the Minster and the good quality TV.I also liked its convenient location and beautiful gardens

"I have stayed in many four star hotels and £138 for a basement was excessive, hotel has the potential to be great as the building is Architectural great, bar is a soulless place i.e. would only have one drink prior to going out to a bar with more ambiance" (97104448)
Hotel food breakfast and Dinner was excellent and good value for money location was close to York centre
basement room felt like i was on the hotel services floor (saturday £138) dirty bed cover bath stained and chiped

The size of the room. The bath.
It cost £9.95 to watch a Sky movie. The lady on the check in desk was unfriendly on arrival but the lady who served on departure was much nicer.

Very friendly staff, good bar and food and fantastic location.
The room we stayed in for this trip was in the newer wing of the hotel and lacked the charm of the rooms in the main building. Wilst the room was very clean and spacious, this was slightly disappointing.

"lovely hotel, full of original features. Staff where extremely helpful. Rooms were very tastefully decorated and clean, the bed linen and bath towels were pretty new and very clean. The view from the room was over the gardens with a view of the York walls and the minster. One to the great things was the location, not knowing York that well it was easy to find when driving, when out shopping we did, at one stage, get lost in the centre of York, all we needed to do was follow the signs to the railway station, which are posted all around the centre to get to the hotel." (99754872)
Very clean, facilities very good. The room was high quality, excellent bath room, very modern and well maintained
very please with my stay, my only complaint would be I found the room very warm but as the room had the original sash windows we where able to open this wasn't a big issue

"I only booked the hotel as it had a spa, but this was unavailable as it was being refurbished, on two occasions we could of been informed of this but weren't. It was very disapointing as we have very stressful jobs & it was the first time in over 8 weeks we have had any time off and we wanted to make the most of it which we couldn't. Other than that the hotel was perfect we will go back again." (99517912)

"A jewel of a hotel in harmony with it's city centre location in one of England's most glorious cities.Redolent of grand hotels of the past with all the delightful anticipation of being able to explore the streets and alleyways just a few minutes walk away.Stand on the staircase and peer down into the lobby and enjoy! Staying here is a destination in itself and not just another bland, homogenous room passed through on the journey." (99574719)

"All of the staff appeared to be friendly, courteous and helpful. The bed was very uncomfortable (the mattress appeared to sag in the middle), and guests may well be advised to contact the hotel prior to arrival if they are allergic to feathers as when reception was informed, the feather duvet was taken away and we were left with only 1 blanket. It is a good job that it was a very warm weekend. Apparently there has recently been an expensive refurbishment (?7 million pounds), but the room appeared to be a little shabby (e.g. window sill paint peeling away, the room door didn't fit properly and took some pushing to lock). A little disappointing for a 4* hotel. The dining room, and food were excellent. Overall would we recommend this hotel? Maybe." (99432829)
Location in York, dining facilities
Uncomfortable bed, feather mattress replaced by one 1 blanket (good job it was warm!) noisy guests (not the Hotel's fault admittedly)
