The staff in the restaurant were lovely and I could not fault the food. It was a real pity the rest of the hotel didn't meet these standards.

Our Hotel room was dirty, the bathroom bin had not been emptied from the previous people.

    Good sized room.

No fruit option for breakfast. No decaff coffee sachets in the room. Room smelt slightly - perhaps an old smoking room now converted maybe?

The staff were very helpful.Food was very good and well priced also the bar prices were good.Ideally placed for bus, train and shops. They had trouble with heating so provided a heater .We also had tea coffee making facilities

The windows either let the wind or water in,and as it rained and was cold outside while we were there it showed up

"There is very little more information I could have had before booking but a more accurate guide as to how far away the car park was would have been useful. As a regular business traveller I was disgusted at the cleanliness of the room which is something very rarely encountered in hotels charging this room rate." (97504044)

The parking was too far away and the room was far from clean. The breakfast was also poor qaulity.

Hotel was centrally positioned. So convenient for most things in Merthyr

The room was dirty. The bathroom floor had hairs on it. There was a leak from the bathroom ceiling. The bedroom floor and skirting board were very dusty. The valances on the bed had dirty footprints on them. As the room had a laminate floor the beds had a tendancy to slide across the floor when turning over!

"A extremely noisy night club outside couldn't get to sleep till 1am no double glazing doubt they will tell you this anyway which makes the hotel completely unsuitable for photographers like me who would like to get up very early to catch dawn light. Not many channels on TV and reception poor. No shampoo or complementary tooth paste. Can't bring in own drinks have to use hotels. IMHO better off with B&B at half the price and a quieter location for Wales. Better suited to young people rather than photographers or families with kids." (3305275348)

Easy access to town centre, lift access

Noisy Nightclub, not many complementaries, no sky, not even basic TV channels like C5.

"Nothing substantive to add. This was a nice and well-run hotel in a very convenient location for touring and business purposes in the region. Indeed, having subsequently visited Brecon for a short time, and been struck by the number of tourists in evidence there as compared to Merthyr, it seems a pity that Merthyr does not appear to compete as effectively as perhaps it ought to for its fair share of the local tourist market. Its convenience for the Beacons, as well as for the history of the mining valleys, is probably unsurpassed in the area. Most of all, the people in the town itself and in the surrounding village communities were all exceptionally friendly and welcoming to us as visitors. Very many thanks to all at The Castle for a thoroughly enjoyable stay." (3304813631)

Very convenient for all amenities in the town; all staff (including the manager) were extremely polite, helpful and friendly; rooms were clean and tidy; bed was firm and very comfortable; and food (especially the carvery)was nicely cooked and plentiful, with friendly and rapid service, and competitively priced.

No serious dislikes. But we did encounter minor problems with a few of the fittings in our room (401) eg shaver point in the bathroom didn`t work, power socket closest to the door was a bit loose and one or two bathroom fittings (eg part of the towel rail and shower head were very loose). Also, napkins were not available on the table at either of our two breakfast sittings (on the second occasion, we requested and were promptly given them); and, following a full day of touring and being out and about, it was disappointing to find that the Carvery had closed as early as 6.00pm on Sunday evening. Having said that, Emma at the Reception deak was extremely helpful in both recommending a good buffet style restaurant in town and in calling them to ensure that they also did not close before we had time to reach them. Finally, we were mildly surprised that, although they were able to provide both coffee and whisky separately, the bar staff were unable to prepare Irish coffees for four to round off a pleasant Saturday night in the bar. Maybe we should have requested Welsh Coffees instead.....!!

Attitude of manager. Large sign in room forbidding food and drink not bought in hotel to be brought in on pain of instant eviction! Also, I enquired as to whether there was a Chinese restaurant nearby and was told by staff that they were not allowed to recommend any restaurants other than the hotel.

"The hotel is definitely NOT a 3 star hotel. To say that it was is misleading. The restaurant which is advertised as a Ristorante is definitely not one of those. The menu & quality of food was disappointing. The Castle is not a bad hotel just one that needs work, regrading and a better menu in the restaurant." (3304215178)

It was central & easy to find.Bed was very comfortable. Staff very fiendly.

The hotel needs some upgrading. The room that I was in was tired and needed some attention. The double glazing was draughty & did not keep out the noise from the main street.

"I travelled for 31/2 hours and paid £79.00 per night to find, when I got there I had to park in a pay and display car park, which was out of sight of the hotel. I think this should be made known when booking. My room had a broken window lock so could not be shut. When I told reception they gave me a key for another room and left me to transport all of my baggage down to the new room by myself. My new room was cold as the heating had been off and the windows open. It was december. There was no information about the hotel or the surrounding town. When I asked about alternative resteraunts I was not given any information. Overall I was disappointed by my stay in this hotel and would book alternative accomodation if I were in the area again. The standard of cleanliness was good and staff were pleasent. When I requested an iron and ironing board they promptly delivered one to my room." (3304043527)
