"Having stayed in three separate Georgian period hotels in the past week (in Wisbech, Edinburgh and Beverly) I ask for a little more in terms of functionality and decor. The bathrooms generally require upgrading with modern sanitary ware, glass shower surrounds rather than old fashioned plastic shower curtains, smart and sparkling tiling on floors and walls as is now standard in modern/refurbished hotels charging similar rates (£85 a night for a double room) even in capital cities. The stay was pleasant and the staff very helpful." (97761187)

Spacious room. Nice view overlooking the river. Nice central location in town centre. Friendly staff.

Central heating radiator not working on arrival. Double glazing behind the Georgian windows would have cut down the noise from a busy main road outside from 6am.

very over priced for standard of room, decoration poor, damp marks on ceiling, window frames etc needed some attention, freeview facilities not properly working/tuned in

"Well-situated right in the middle of Wisbech with ample parking available in the hotel's own car park." (97726132)

Spacious room, lots of tea and coffee available. Helpful staff.

It would have been good to have breakfast included in the room rate, for the price paid - however, it was clear at the time of booking that this was a room rate only.

Very central to the town, good veiws of the river. The staff very freindly and helpful.

rather dated in furniture and furnishings, although very comfortable. We do realise is it a listed building and not much can be done, but as I said it was very comfortable.

"The White Lion hotel, Wibech was centrally located for those visiting the Fens , East anglia and the East midlands. Breakfast times allowed us to get early starts, or if we wanted a sleep-in we could do that too! Rooms were comfortable, clean and tidy. If you get a room in the front of the building, you would get a great view of the historic Georgian terrace houses (as we did on our last stay)on the riverside in Wisbech, unfortunately, our room was in the back this time!" (99446544)

Clean, tidy, friendly staff & good breakfast!

Very interesting Georgian building with nice views across the River Nene. Very good continental breakfast with plenty of choice of food - the cooked breakfast looked enormous!! The staff were very pleasant and keen to give good service

Room was cold when we first arrived but this was quickly corrected by staff. Also quite noisy in early morning due to traffic.

"Overall, a pleasant stay. I arrived in Wisbech by car very late in the evening and was very grateful that a member of the hotel staff could guide me to the hotel by issuing directions on my mobile 'phone. The hotel was quiet and I enjoyed a relatively good night's sleep. The breakfast was enjoyable - good food and courteous staff. Check out was fast and efficient." (99033360)

The accommodation was clean and tidy.

The single room was rather small with basic facilities.

"There isn't anything that I would have liked to have known before the visit. We had all the relvent information from Active Hotels." (3304597195)

It was very clean and the staff were very friendly. We didn't check in until late and didn't have any problems with finding staff. The car park was easy to find and had plenty of space. The room was light and bright and the bathroom was huge, which was a nice surprise. We over looked the river which was a nice view in the morning. We felt very refreshed and ready for our day ahead.

There wasn't anything that we didn't like about he hotel.

    ROOM QUITE CRAMPED

  • 5/10 Anonymous ( Mature couple)

"I would like the opportunity to have booked bed and breakfast rather than room only as this does not allow for fair comparisons with other websites. The hotel was adedquate but had the air of shabbiness and in need of re-decoration in some places. Service was generally fair or better, mainly the service at breakfast which was good. I would have liked more information on how to find the hotel by road. I would only recommend this hotel as offerring basic hotel accommodation." (3305141016)

Spacious room with plenty of hanging and storage space. The hotel was quiet with no disturbances.

Poor quality bathroom facilities. Poor quality carpets (well worn), Not a very hygenic bathroom. Cleanliness was only adedquate, there were hairs in the bath and a thick layer of dust on both headboards.

  • 9/10 Anonymous ( Mature couple)

"The stay was very pleasant indeed and although we did not spend much time in the hotel all the facilities were available. We were particularly impressed with the breakfast on Sunday morning. The only problem at the time of booking was the fact that I could not get a copy of the location map from the internet." (3304184583)

Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Room was very clean and nicely decorated. Good parking facilities.

We were at the front of the hotel and traffick noise was slightly annoying. The night was when England played Portugal in the World Cup which probably meant there was more late night/early morning traffick than usual. The shower fitting was loose.

  • 6/10 Megan ( Mature couple)

from Worcester park , United Kingdom;GB  on  June 22, 2006

"The rooms have very little ventilation, windows open only a few inches and the small room at the back of the hotel (110) was like a sauna. To make matters much much worse, rooms at the top/back overlook the rear of a pub. The noise from the pub on Saturday night was horrendous. There was karaoke, music, swearing, shouting and fighting. We saw reception who were happy to move us to another, much nicer room at the front, informing us that the place was open until 1.00 a.m. on Friday, Sat and Sunday! On Sunday night a pair of drunks spent about 30 minutes hammering on the front door, shouting and swearing to be let in. The whole building shook. There are traffic lights outside the front too and lots of traffic noise. The hotel was almost empty and having stayed there I am not at all suprised. The staff however are superb. The young woman who was on during the day was lovely as was the chap at night but they can't work miracles." (3304875846)

The staff were efficient, friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

The first room we were given was very small and very stuffy. The bathroom was also tiny and tatty. No food available at weekends.

  • 7/10 Carmen ( Young couple)

from Waltham cross , United Kingdom;GB  on  May 31, 2006

"The accommodation was good value for money and had all the facilities you would expect (tea/coffee, iron, telephone etc.) However the decor was a little dated despite new curtains and bedspread. The bathroom was especially dated as it was a 70's pink suite. The accommodation was clean but the bathroom needed going over with some limescale remover as the limescale on the shower and bath made it look dirty even though it wasn't. For the money though, the room was acceptable. The bed was comfortable although a little on the hard side and the hotel was generally quite quiet." (3304737984)

Staff were friendly and it was a good price

Dated decor especially in bathroom, no do not disturb sign.

"The hotel was clean and the staff very friendly, food was good. I didn't realise that there wasn't a lift to the upper floors, and as my husband has had a knee replacement, he found the stairs daunting. We enjoyed our stay despite this." (3304612789)

The location of the hotel was excellent for getting to the places we wished to visit

Having to climb a lot of stairs to our room on the top floor!

"I realize that we got a fair price for the room we didnt have breakfast as we had read in previous reviews that it was overpriced so we went to nearby witherspoons as suggested. The room we were given was at the very top and overlooking the back of the hotel although it appeared very empty - had we been given a better room I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel as it was ideally situated and the staff were friendly - but the room let it down." (3304732164)

The ensuite had obviously been added and was so small that the sink was in the main area of the bedroom. The curtains were extreemely thin so let in the early morning sun.

  • 7/10 Graham ( Solo leisure traveller)

    from Hornby , United Kingdom;GB  on  May 5, 2006

"Price was room only. Room was OK but needed modernisation considering the price and the supposed discount. Breakfast on Sunday was good (but cost £10) and was not available on Monday (a Bank Holiday) until 9am - I needed to be away at 8.15am. A 'toast and tea' breakfast was made by the night porter. Recommended with a 'yes, but....'" (3304605009)

    Quiet and adequate

A little 'dated'. No cleaning or bed making on Sunday morning.

There was no pressure for us to leave on time

The cost of full engish breakfast was expensive at £10, we went to wetherspoons for the same breakfast at £1.99(coffee extra), excellent
