We were very disappointed with the hotel and refrained from taking the paid for breakfast due to its poor quality. No proper shower and rooms far too hot.

"Fine unless there's a fire - then the place would be a deathtrap. If you're staying here, make sure that you know where the fire exits are." (107299499)

    The location. Big room.

No natural light - only light was borrowed from an interior staircase. Air conditioning unable to cope with the temperature - very hot room. During an early morning fire alarm (false) the signs for fire escape led us to a dead end - a member of staff sent us back from the basement to find our way through a bewildering array of ballrooms on the ground-floor. Fortunately, it was a false alarm, but I was terrified and the staff didn't seem to be that interested.

Car park a bit pricey but understandable in view of the location and circumstances (glad to have the security).

"Very enjoyable we were staying in Liverpool as a result of bringing our son to Liverpool University and the hotel added to a very enjoyable stay. We are already planning our next stay in Liverpool." (107275065)

It was good to stay in such an historic hotel, its original splendour is still evident.

Our reservation was not on the computer and we were left waiting whilst the receptionist confirmed they had received it. Also we were told at breakfast that it was not included in the price when on the confirmation it clearly stated that it was. This was honoured by the restaurant manager.

"I thought it was an excellent value, and overall, it was the most pleasant hotel experience we had in our U.K. visit. The spaciousness of the rooms was amazing, something you just do not find in a new hotel." (108053880)

old world elegance and unusually spacious guest room

The hotel is elegant but it's decor a bit "tired," including things that need repair (e.g. wall plaster). It is a significant historical site in itself, and is worthy of preservation; I did read that the hotel is scheduled for a renovation.

Hotel was in a great location and was very beautiful. Staff were friendly and helpful.

No electricity in our room and so we had to call for a member of staff to fix it but couldnt. We then had to re-pack and move to another room. Our room was extremely hot.

"We generally enjoyed the stay but felt the hotel rooms were not up to standard for rate charegd." (108050569)

Very busy weekend in Liverpool with the tall ships and open golf competiition so the atmosphere both in and out of the hotel was very good. Liverpool is always great for a short break.

Room was in need of updating furniture was old and tatty, big unsightly stains on ceiling, bathroom was dated with dripping taps, windows had been left open so net curtain was filthy.

"Had a great time at a reasonable price " (108026952)

Faded glamour, marble walls & chandeliers, large room with great bathroom, really nice old wardrobes, convenient location

Had to pay an extra fiver to use the swimming pool. Could not check in till 2.30 pm. Restaurant looked rather disappointing, although did not eat there.

Food was well prepared, beautifully presented, of good quality and palatable.

Had the distinct impression that staff was not there to serve guests, rather guests were there to inconvenience the staff.

"Very enjoyable stay. The location was excellent - very convenient to points of interest. The historical significance of this 1826 structure was not lost on us." (97470710)

The only negative my companion and I encountered was the absence of a key to the room for the first several hours of our stay. This required a hotel lobby employee to be asked to take us to the room with a master key for entry. This condition was offset by the offer of the staff to allow us a complimentary 6 pm check-out the following day, which enabled us to leisurely prepare for our 10 pm ferry to Dublin.

Conveniently placed. Spacious room. Old fashioned style attractive. Desk staff helpful. Early bird supper good value.

Would prefer blankets - duvet too hot. Bedside light difficult to reach when lying. Toilet holder bar missing - took 2 days to get. Carpet on wallside of bed had not been cleaned for weeks. Room foyer was not cleaned while we were there. Junction of wall and floor in bathroom looked grubby.

"A clearer idea of the poor level of accomodation provided by this hotel should have been available before booking. That would have enabled a judgment as to whether it was commensurate with the price being charged for the room. It was not. The city centre location of the hotel did not justify the price of £100 per night. The staff were understandably demoralised and surly, although helpful if pressed." (97120699)

    An adequately working shower

The room was cramped with a window of opaque glass which looked onto a wall two feet away and which admitted very little natural light. The bed was uncomfortable with a mattress which felt old and cheap. The decor appeared to have been designed in the 80s with little or no update since then.

"My stay at the Britannia Hotel in Liverpool was great, it was right in the heart of Liverpool, a minute walk from the shopping centre, a minute walk from Lime Street train station. Also we went to watch Liverpool play at Anfield and the hotel was close to that (about 5 min drive) and there is a Taxi rank right next to the hotel. I can't rally fault my stay there." (97986542)
