I think that due to the circumstances of the previous owner absconding and defrauding the company (locals were keen to share the information) it would be very unfair to grade the staff and hotel using the above voting mechanism. The staff were under undue pressure after only four days of taking over as all bookings had been deleted by the moonlighters. However, when we arrived, they made us feel very welcome and duly found all three couples in our party a room. The room was clean and tidy, albeit the matress was in need of replacement but all other facilities were in good working order and in good condition. The staff were a family trying to make the best of a bad situation but had a good sense of humour and were very friendly - gave the impression of a family run hotel rather than a chain, which is to their credit. Breakfast was an experience but again, due to our group maintaining a good sense of humour and the staff being so approachable and adaptable (lack of crockery - small coffee pots being used as milk jugs - one can only assume the previous owner moved on with more than money), all I can say is that it was a pleasurable experience and I have no doubt that given support and time to change the damaged reputation, the current management will turn the hotel around.

    "Didn't stay you CANCELLED!!!!!!!!" (107174676)

None it was cancelled and I had to book another hotel, the reason given was a water leak, which I found to be false, I was told I WOULD GET MY MONEY BACK.

    Everyhing on the booking site.

"My review does not paint a very good picture of this hotel. However if the customer service and general cleanliness were to be greatly improved, then I feel that it would be a wonderful place to stay. It is sad that such a wonderful old building is not being allowed to show its full potential." (107156183)

    Central location. Pleasant enclosed courtyard.

Very poor customer service. Lengthy check-in. Restaurant did not open for evening meals. Restaurant opened for breakfast approx' one hour late and had a lmited selection of food. The restaurant and public areas were in need of a thorough clean.

    Most attractive old building.

Cleanliness not perfect, shower curtain slightly mouldy, stale tasting teabags and biscuits in room.Breakfast adequate only poor service,no toast or extra tea/coffee offered

"Interesting quirky place and very central but parking a bit hard work! " (107197129)

Interesting old tudor hotel in central location. Bar had some good real ales. We got a really good rate on a suite with 4 poster bed through on-line site.

Parking is a bit of a nightmare. The inn is on a pedestrian street (in town) with no parking. The nearest is an NCP at £20 per day. The car park is close - as the crow flies - but difficult to find in the one way system.

The service in the dining room was excellent

There was no smoked haddock on the menu for 2 days and there was no fruit (prunes grapefruit for 1 days, which was very disappointing.

"Many guests were loud during the night and the place was difficult to find. Sleep was impossible. The management needs to control other guests, especially after 11 p.m. Three a.m. drunken jokes are not humorous. The room was not clean and the Tele did not work. It will take some time to recover from this stay. Five hundred dollars is a bit too much to pay for torture." (97992412)

The bed was slanted and uncomfortable

"We enjoyed it. Pity about the lack of restaurants in the 'city centre' and generally run-down feel of the town." (107268414)

Fantastic historic building (550 years old) - the highlight of our visit to Gloucester.

The hotel is well overdue for a refurb but this would be very expensive due to its age, so not surprised it hasn't been decorated since about 1985. Looking at Gloucester city centre on a Friday night, which was almost empty, it won't get the business to enable this refurb until the town gets some more investment and jobs.

The hotel was beautiful, the cooked breakfast was quite nice and the room was clean and had a lovely sized bathroom.

The breakfast waitress was overstretched, buffet breakfast or even just putting out self serve drinks - tea, juice etc. would resolve this problem and long waiting times. Couldn't find a member of staff to check out so I had to post my keys through the reception letterbox!

"Appalling. What was meant to be a special night away turned in to an expensive farce. £126 for 1 night? We wont be staying again." (107132000)

    Close to centre of town

No-one available to check us in, or out the following day. Parking vouchers for free parking nearby referred to on the website are non-existent. Shower water was cold on first day. Room was poorly decorated, bath panel falling off, electric switches falling off, dirty tissue under the bed. Only 1 girl trying to serve breakfast to all the guests. Very slow service. Coffee or tea unavailable at breakfast because hotel had 'run out of hot water'! 1 or our breakfasts was missing fried bread.

Character of hotel (not a right angle in sight), quality of breakfast, location

Room very hot, toilet flush broken, bed cover stained, poor view from room, shower temperature reliant on hand basin use, steep staircase may cause problems for the infirm

"Not going back there again. " (107106460)

See below point - their doubles rooms are usually £65 p/n but due to the booking which was not made (see below) they did let me pay £45 for it.

When I arrived at the hotel they did not have a record of the booking. Please investigate. The TV in the room was broken, the room as sweltering, the breakfast service was poor plus the chef oggled me constantly through my morning dining.

"It was OK but didn't feel as though we were being looked after. The New Inn complex obviously has great potential but is in danger of being unrealised. A couple we were talking to decided to check out early because of faulty loo and gaps in window frame of their room and it crossed our minds too. We cannot recommend it." (108082603)

Rooms clean. Good choice of beers in the real ale bar. Tudor courtyard. Efficient, friendly young waitress in restaurant.

No record of our reservation. Loo in room not operable. Hardly ever anyone on reception. Courtyard loos not stocked. Basic restaurant menu. Easily heard casual use of the 'F' word by chef in restaurant.

"I was told it was recommended to reserve a table for dinner - the first night there were two others present when I arrived at 8pm and no one the second night at the same time. I parked in a nearby car park and the receptionist said she didn't know anything about the voucher mentionned on the website that would enable me to exit in the morning so I didn't have to pay £20 for an overnight use." (97476852)

Historical interest of hotel. Waitress on 1st night gave OK service but then there were only 2 other people in the restaurant.

Receptionist had difficulty giving me directions to find the hotel. I was asked to pay at the time of check-in which has never been the case at any other hotel. Windows were warped and allowed even more street noise in, the bath was dirty and the towel rail leaked water. The window frames were breaking at the top. Food was better the first night than the second and I witnessed my egg being scrambled in the microwave for breakfast - the length of time it took - surely could have been done in a pan - and the toast was burnt. Restaurant staff each time spent most of their time chatting in the kitchen.

"Gloucester is a lovely city and has some beautiful and historic sites. It does not deserve such indifferent hospitality." (97282487)

Gloucester is a beautiful place -- full of history and grace. The hotel is steeped in history and has a magnificent forecourt and restaurant.

The management leaves much to be desired. The indifference to guests is not welcoming. The demand for 5 nights' accommodation paid on arrival at 10pm on a Sunday night is not welcoming. Nor is the lack of even frozen sandwiches when the train is late and you are a woman arriving in a strange city. The bath towel was not changed from the one that I had on Sunday evening until I left on the Friday morning, in spite of my putting the towel in the shower on Wed and Thurs. On Thursday the wet towel was draped across the bed to dry out, thus making the bedspread damp!

Ten minutes later he returned and said that he would move us into a quieter room - in fact it was an upgrade to a much better suite! "Clean and well appointed room. Very quirky with exposed beams and uneven floors - all part of the character. The staff gave us a tour of the property including other rooms, cellar and unused areas - full of history!! The relatively new management has great plans for impoving the existing bars and restuarant and reclaiming some of the older unused parts of the hotel. We really enjoted staying in this historic hotel.Being situated in the pedestrianised shopping precinct it was not easy to find (SatNav could not get us to the door!) Free parking at public carpark at rear of hotel but ask for directions before you arrive! Busy Real Ale bar - plenty of characters and great beer. Not much to do/see in the immediate area except the Cathedral and Docks. (and lots of same ole High Street shops!)" (97875493)

I loved the history/oldness of the hotel. the restaurant staff were friendly and helpful. Good breakfasts.

I appreciate that it was an historic building. I do feel that all the windows should have closed/shut. I think the welcome could have been a little friendlier. The person in charge seemed incredibly busy - there were no introductions. toiletories were somewhat mean.
