"The hotel is in a beautiful location but is in need of updating. The hotel is reputed to be haunted and we discovered this in the bar just before going to bed! The evening meal was good but breakfast was rather greasy." (97701951)

The warm welcome & friendly staff.

Rather old fashioned and very quiet on the Friday night we stayed.

"I understand that the hotel has just changed hands and it shows. The place has a lot of potential but needs some money spent on it to make it more inviting. It will probably improve when the new owners settle in. The timing was wrong for me and the dreadful storm we had during my stay did not help." (97182319)

The room and public areas were cold. The decor was poor. The food was adequate.

"Overall, good value for money and satisfcatory for business user or for family overnight stay. Food was good, cutlery and glasses were clean and service was resonably prompt." (97642142)

Friendly staff, hotel has warm homely feel, nice quiet location.

Bit dated in decor and layout of rooms means you can sometimes hear others moving about/talking.

Okay, value for money, friendly service.

    Restaurant was closed

"overall excellent first impressions of friendliness and efficiency borne out throughout our stay; comfortable lounge area and first rate restaurant for both a splendid evening meal and substantial breakfast" (97329460)

initial surprise when opened door to penthouse stairs; spaciousness; views in three directions; furnishings; comfortable bed

dislike is too strong a word - bathroom large and airy, but some more thought and improvement needed: bath water very slow to drain

"Very nice quiet hotel, accomdation comfortable and lovely food. Altogether a lovely relaxing week-end break." (99276666)

The hotel was in lovely quiet location, nice and peaceful. The hotel has undergone three years of restoration and the bedrooms (at least ours) was comforatble, nicely decorated with fully refurbished bathrooms. We had a lovely stay, nice and peaceful. The gardens were lovely and well looked after. I feel that the windows in the bedrooms let the hotel down as they didn't shut properly and need replacing.

"Given the problems that the hotel has had in the past (taken from cutting about the restaurant on the noticeboard outside reception, the hotel has clearly picked itself up and is starting to build a reputation." (99319638)

Clean, friendly staff, not too noisey. Breakfast was good. never tried restaurant, but is reputed to be good.

State of repair of the hotel. Windows and interior furniture needed serious maintenance. Squeaky fire door is a menace.

"The hotel was nice and the staff were accommodating but the room had obviously been used for smoking previously which was upsetting for two non-smokers, one of whom was pregnant. The breakfast was good but I felt the hotel was overpriced in general, although I guess in keeping for the rates charged in the local area." (99736127)

Breakfast was good and staff were nice.

    Room smelt of smoke.

"I would certainly stay here again. Although we were the only clients in the dining room that night, there was nothing missed off the menu and the food was innovative and delicious and extremely reasonable for the superb quality. The room was spacious and comfortable. Apparently the owners have only had the hotel for about 3 years and some of the decor is a little tired, but they are working on it. The staff were wonderful, friendly without being too pushy. Definitely on the list." (99491975)

Spacious room, comfortable bed, good sized bathroom with very good shower. Plenty of sockets for hairdyrer, phone charger etc.

CH rather noisy! But only on start up. Windows could do with cleaning.

"The only downside, if it is a downside, is that the hotel is the only public place in this quiet village. Not even a shop. The hotel bar doubles as the local pub so it seems to have people in most nights but the village is very quiet at night. The whole experience was fantastic. Very relaxing. The meal was excellent. The staff were very friendly. The room was spacios and comfortable. We will be coming back" (99809302)

The room was excellent. Spacious, quiet and comfortable as was the bathroom.

  • 9/10 David (Mature couple)

    from Wirral , United Kingdom;GB on  March 7, 2007

"In general a decent place for a stay. Staff attentive and helpful. I suppose you could say that it could do with a little sprucing up - for instance there was evidence of a water leak (presumably roof) on some of the ceiling and wall in our room. However I don't think that detracts form it too much, and if a sum of money were spent I would presume the costs would increase to match." (99959609)

The only 'complaint' would be that they could do with improving the sound-proofing between rooms.

"Overall the stay was fine. The place is comfortable and friendly. Food was very good. It was only the heating problem in my room tht let down the experience. Double glazing would really make a difference." (99264230)

Relaxed and comfortable. Good attention bye staff

Room was a litle on the cold side with the heated towel rail/ radiator not working.

  • 9/10 Bev (Solo business traveller)

"Very enjoyable stay and very relaxing considering it was just an overnight business trip en route. I would certainly love to return on a weekend break and have more of a chance to explore the hotel and the area" (99992872)

Very friendly welcoming staff. Suberb dinner in front of a log fire - very relaxing and enjoyable. Good breakfast too.

I was a bit cold when I first arrived - the heating was on, but I got cold sitting around using laptop. However, it was November in the Lake District, so maybe I am just being a soft Southerner who wasn't wearing enough layers!

"I was well looked after, treated with courtesy and have no grounds for complaint . I would have liked a bit more cosiness: the main rooms seem a bit soul-less and without atmosphere." (99204543)

quiet, clean, comfortable, convenient for my purposes.

I would prefer a bath to a shower.

"I was unfortunate enough to leave my wallet with all monies and credit cards at my home in Weston-super-Mare after leaving home at 4 a.m. in the morning and was unable to stop at motorway services for the usual breakfast and coffee pick me up. I was booked into the this Hotel from that afternoon and went directly to the Hotel arriving at 0745 a.m. The receptionist was most helpful and after a brief expalnation of my predicament was invited to a full English breakfast with fruit juice and coffee without hesitation. The food was wonderful as were the staff." (99291113)

Warm, comfortable, spacious and relaxing with pleasant country views.

  • 3/10 Douglas (Mature couple)

    from Glasgow , United Kingdom;GB on  October 17, 2006

"The price of the accommodation was expensive for the very poor standard offered. The restaurant food was average - how it was awarded a rosette is a mystery! Very expensive wine list. Only the freshly cooked breakfast redeemed itself. We will never return nor will we recommend the hotel to anyone. Next time a Travel Lodge where there is a known standard." (99197230)

    cold, uninviting and lacking guests

"The staff were very friendly and efficient, nothing was too mch trouble for them. The setting of the hotel was very peaceful and tranquil - we were even lucky with the weather on what was a very rainy weekend. The food could not be faulted, as good a meal as you could get anywhere. Perfect base for exploring the Eden Valley, or as a gateway to the Lakes." (3305214065)

"Position of the room. Whether the windows opened or not. When we arrived at night it was not easy to see where the hotel entrance was, and where one should park one's car. It was also difficult to locate the hotel, we had to ask twice to get the right road." (3305034587)

Excellent accommodation, comfortable and very well equipped room, staff helpful, polite and cheerful!

Hot water at wash hand basin took a while to arrive, late in the evening! No hand rail in the shower - awkward when one's balance is not too good! Difficult to open window for fresh air - needed two people to do this. No herbal tea in 'Hostess tray'.

Staff were very helpful especially the Austrailian girls. Breakfast was very good, the garden was pretty to look out at and the overall setting of the village was peaceful and relaxing.

Although the rooms had been recently decorated this hotel needs substantial investment to bring it up to a standard that would make me want to stay here again.

We booked dinner in the restaurant and did not know what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised the food was fantastic, infact outdid the hotel, it was one of the nicest meals we have had, me and my husband eat often at top restaurants and this was A1."
