"For a small independent hotel they overall service and effect was very good" (107205004)

The welcome given to us was wonderfully friendly and we had a very enjoyable stay.

In the two nights I was there I didn't discover any! ... well a telephone in my bedroom would have been useful but not essential.

    excellent location, staff friendly.

    Lamp in lounge not working.

"OK, but not what was expected." (97537083)

Booked for a couple to spend their wedding night. They loved the bed, the room, the jacuzzi. Staff were pleasant.

No tea making facilities in room, no glasses for water - not good value for a room that cost £195 per night. So went down to breakfast at 8.30 as hungry but very thirsty and waited an hour for service! Very poor although they couldn't help the fire drill! Also, water was pouring through the ceiling of restaurant which livened up the breakfast!

"ok, but room a bit small." (108086250)

    quaint

should have been warned that its very low ceilings in the Chaucer Room, hard to stand up in places.

"Good room, lots of character. Noisy outside very early in the mornings with deliveries and rubbish collections. Excellent city centre location with lots of amenities. Hotel though wasn't value for money. Everytime we went into reception we felt as if we were intruding on a family get together - with hoteliers family all sat round..... their lives seemed on display." (97352279)

The Character of building and history and being in a city centre location.

No biscuits in room, not offered cereals or fruit at breakfast - no ketchup even offered - and to be honest, we would have been too scared to ask! These little things were not forthcoming and we felt that a cheaper B&B would have been more homely and friendly. Generally - cold and unfriendly and just wanted our money. They gave us the impression that they didn't ever expect the customer to return - and they are correct!

"Quite pleasant, but attention to the above details would have improved it vastly." (97324020)

Nice traditional environment, well and tastefully furnished, very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent.

The bathroom extractor fan was very noisy and remained on for almost 1 hour after the light being switched off. The electrical toilet pump system intermittently switched on and off during the night and was loud enough to wake us up. The room was small for £95. The bedroom window was difficult to open. Quite terse service for breakfast, though quick and efficent. The hotel should clearly state that the recomended parking is a 10 minute walk away (more with luggage) and provide clearer directions to and from the car park.

"Charming recently renovated hotel in old part of town, and near to the Cathedral. The benefits are having an atmospheric and central location, drawbacks are parking difficulties and some night time noise. We felt that the pluses outweighed the negatives.Overall a very enjoyable stay." (99954284)

Very central. Accommodation very clean and owner and staff very friendly.

The downside of being central is some early morning noise experienced from local businesses.

"Although the room we stayed in was advertised as the most economic of the rooms in the hotel, it was too small for the amount of furniture in it, requiring turn-taking and furniture clambering to move around with two people in the room. The staff were very helpful, and the location was excellent. In all, the value was fair, rather than good." (97365202)

    Good location. Nice staff

Shower was tepid, in spite of repeated comments. Room was too small for two people, requiring queueing to get around.

The heat was not working when we checked in. Long Stay car park required coins and did not accept our UK or US cards.

The location was brilliant, the room was beautiful and the bed was extremely comfortable! Breakfast was good too. We had the tiny Pilgrim room, that was perfect for just the 2 of us and because we were not spending much time in there, but for other people it may have been too small.

Because the hotel is a tearoom downstairs, we found it hard to find who were supposed to check-in with because all staff seemed to be focused on the tea rooms. also, when we came back to our room after our night out, we had found that our room had been entered by who we must assume were the staff, but they failed to lock the door when they left. TV signal was bad too. Had a Freeview box but no remote for it so could not use it.

"Far too expensive for the level of comfort provided. For this kind of money I would at least expect a full-scale buffet style breakfast to be available + lounge and other hotel facillities (like a reception-desk for example...) No fault of the staff (who were great) but this hotel is essentially just a 'Bed and Breakfast', albeit in a great location." (97399218)

Historic building, great location, clean room, very friendly/efficient staff.

Cramped shower-room/toilet, below average breakfast, too expensive.

"This is a lovely clean hotel right in the middle of Canterbury. The staff were very polite and the rooms more than adequate for there purpose though the bathroom was a little small. Overall it was a lovely stay in an historic town and as the hotel is in the middle of Canterbury, you do not have to walk far to see the attractions. I would certainly book this hotel again." (97070604)

The rooms were clean and tidy.

There is no parking facilities nearby and the walk from the long stay car park is a little far.

Jacuzzi and four poster bed. Also it felt less like a hotel than usual but in a good way. Right next to the cathedral.

Walk to and from the long stay car park !

"Well situated for a leisure break and within walking distance of the Cathedral, Norman castle, the High Street and several good restaurants" (97952752)

The overall character of the hotel

Lack of hot water in the shower Main pendant light fitting wiring not properly secured High TOG duvet, too much for a Summer night

"We had a lovely time at the Sun Hotel in Canterbury, we stayed in the Dickens Suite, which was full of character and charm. The room is well equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryer, lcd tv; large four poster bed!! and big fluffy towels. Breakfast was excellent choice of full english or continental. Staff were cheerfull and efficient. Parking was some distance away the only negative from the weekend." (99090955)

It was nice to stay in an old character building. The hotel was lovely, the room was well presented and very comfortable. The hotel is central to all amenities of the city.

Canterbury does not like the car!!! Parking is a distance away ok as the weather was fine but not if had been raining.

Character of the hotel and friendliness of hotel staff

None really - the fact that we can't park the car at the hotel or drive easily to the hotel is more to do with the traffic restriction of the area rather than the hotel itself.

"A fairly well modernised historic building still retaining all of the period features. Possibly not the best accomodation for someone very tall as it contains many low beams. It is also not suitable for anyone with a walking disability as the stairs are steep and quite narrow. The breakfast was filling and well cooked and the cook was willing to vary from the stated menu. Probably the most inconvenient part of the stay was not down to the hotel itself in that parking facilities are poor throughout the city. The Queningate car park offered the best option for overnight stays." (99743288)

    Very clean and tidy

"When you enter the hotel it is a little disconcerting because the check-in desk is also the counter in the tea rooms. The rooms are upstairs and the stairs up to them are very narrow and steep. But the room I was staying in (Chaucer room) was very comfortable and immaculately clean and very quiet which since I am a very light sleeper was particularly appreciated. The breakfast was very good - continental with cheese and meat and excellent coffee. The staff were very friendly and helpful providing a full length mirror when I asked for one and calling a taxi." (99505492)

The room was immaculate and quiet and the bathroom particularly lovely with nice thick towels. There was satellite tv which was also a plus.

The only negative comment I have about the room is that it did not have a full length mirror which is quite important when you are travelling on business. But that said, when I asked for one the owner provided one immediately.

"As above. Sympathetically renovated building with individual, antique style furnishings. The foyer doubles as tea room, breakfast room and lounge and despite attractive, stain-glass light fittings is rather bland. Breakfast was produced speedily and was tasty." (99886711)

Great situation, near the Cathedral in Canterbury. Lovely 4 poster bed. Window seat from which could watch the world go by. Large en suite with enormous jacusi type bath. Friendly staff.

    Very small wardrobe

Helpful desk staff. Comfortable sized room with ensuite facilities. Tasteful decor. Charming location 2 minutes walk from cathedral, tourist info and high street. Very satisfying breakfast.

Streets are noisy on a Saturday night as pubs clear out. Stairs are steep and ceiling beams low in places (to be expected from a building of this vintage).
