    good breakfast

Many noises!... and particularly coming from the other customers ( working men using this hostel as their own house) late in the night: some of them finishing their pint of beer laughing and chatting loudly in the patio just in front of their rooms. It was very annoying for people with a long journey and wanting to sleep...

Poor bed ? it had see better days ? got a bad back because of it. It didn't help my day.

"Very happy with service, felt welcome and at ease (as a solo female visiting a terminally ill friend) with the staff willing to lend a sympathetic ear as I was a bit distressed after returning from my friends." (107289016)

Very welcoming atmosphere; friendly and helpful staff; nice, clean bathroom; excellent continental breakfast.

A couple of cobwebs!! Can't think of anything else.

A good breakfast was served by pleasant staff.

Room directly above kitchen and smelled of cooking fat. Bathroom was very shabby with mould around tiles, rusty radiator and dirty curtains. Carpets black around edges with dirt/age. TV did not work.

Breakfast Ok, bed good, towels nice and fluffy.

Bathroom dirty, furniture very old and neglected - probably bought to put a theme in the hotel but was just old and un-attractive. Wire coat hangers!! The whole hotel needed a shake up.

Receptionist on arrival was very helpful and friendly

Cleaning and kitchen staff swearing (f word). Bathroom smelt of damp. Curtain did not cover window. TV far too loud in lounge, I had to get up and turn it off at 1.30 am. No food available after 9.15pm

"Appalling. Have advised colleagues and Coca-Cola (who we were visiting) not to use the Mary Rose again ever." (97344692)

    None

My colleague developed food poisoning from the meal he chose from the very limited menu at the hotel the night before. He ordered gammon which was served as cold ham. He was violently ill from early hours of the morning. We will not be going back. The second bad point is the behaviour of the various young people in the bar on the evening. They appeared to be friends of the receptionist and created an unsuitable atmosphere for business travellers. Finally, no red wine in the bar!

"In general, my stay was a good one. the room was a little cramped - 9 inches between the foot of the bed and the furniture! The sloping ceiling could be a problem for anyone taller than me. The guest accomodation was 'tired' in appearance, and the hotel had an air of struggling for survival. The public areas wer better. The adjacent High Street ara also seemed to struggling. I will happily stay at the Mary Rose again in 2009." (97922611)

"We arrived fairly late, around eleven p.m. and the hotel receptionist was expecting us. We asked whether it might be possible to buy a drink having driven from the West Country, but were informed that the bar had just been closed. This rather spoilt the welcome. Overall the room was fairly comfortable but lacked general cleanliness; the ensuite was filthy and the room lacked expected facilities such as a hairdryer and an iron. The continental breakfast was of a reasonable standard although only white bread was available." (97808369)

Our twin room was spacious. The pillows were soft and the towels provided were of good quality.

The ensuite facilities had not been cleaned from the previous occupant. This was very unpleasant. As the hotel is beneath the railway arches, it was difficult to get to sleep because of the rumbling of the trains. Also, the parking facilities were badly lit and muddy. We felt a sense of unease about leaving our car there.

  • 4/10 Anonymous (Solo leisure traveller)

"The hotel was hard to find, stuck down a cul de sac. I half expected to see Basil Fawlty spring out from behind a door as the hotel was very much stuck in the 1970s - quite shabby with ageing equipment and furniture. It was also a complete maze with poor door directions. The only staff member knocked off at 11.30 pm leaving me to stumble round the building in the dark to find the night access which lead me into an unknown part of the hotel. Breakfast stopped at 9.30 am on the Sunday morning which I missed having had a poor night due to the noise of the rain beating down on the flat roof outside my window and the bright security light that flooded my room. I was rudely awoken at 9.30 am by the housekeeper hammering on the door wanting to make up my room, the shower was moody and subject to erratic temperature changes. I left the hotel hungry and tired. It would be good to warn other patrons of the old fashioned nature of this hotel, explain that the hotel is quite hard to find and, likely as not, the room will be even harder. Also unsuitable for tall people - clearance height on doors v low as old coaching inn." (97580777)

I could plug in my hairdryer close to a mirror. And it was cheap!

On the basis that you get what you pay for...miniscule room (smaller than my en suite bathroom at home!), dated furnishings and equipment, horrible bedding, early cessation of breakfast, early checkout, early chambermaid! Dreadful night's sleep - see below

    the location and price

There was no Bar or Restaurant facilities, which left me (after a long journey) hungry and tired, I ended up having a takeaway in my room - this is not good enough.

Would have liked more info and pictures and maybe be told that you have to walk through a pub to get to accomadation." (97249343)

It smelt of old chip fat and cigarettes downstairs and of very strong paint in the bedroom. The shower was very poor and the bed was rock hard. Felt very unsafe on the whole, pretty cheap and nasty.

"For what we paid, I couldn't fault the hotel, but it was very much a flying overnight stay and very early departure to visit friends in Kent - however, I should have no hesitation in staying longer. A secured car park would be useful. I shall be visiting Kent again in the near future, and my car will have some valuable equipment in it - I shall consider a secure car park essential then and provision of security may well influence my decision where to stay. Still, absolutely ideal for our visit last weekend. Thank you." (97653597)

Very good value for money, well positioned, clean, reception efficient & friendly. Bed comfortable, hotel had a very relaxing feel.

Shower difficult to manage, but that's the only fault.

The position. It was central for our needs.Bed linen and towels were spotlessly clean.

The bathroom was separate from the room. The shower was quite dangerous as the temperature could not be controlled and veered from boiling hot to ice cold. The shower head needed a thorough clean as only a few of the nozzles were working. There was no hot water from the basin tap.

  • 5/10 Valerie (Group of adult friends)

from Waterlooville, , GB on  January 16, 2008

"The two other rooms we had booked were very small and in one, most of the light bulbs did not work. Most of us at some point knocked our heads on the sloping ceilings. The English breakfast was very small for the price and when I asked for extra butter, you would have thought that I had asked for the crown jewels! More pictures of the interior, including the smaller rooms and notification that access to rooms was external, would be useful information on the web site." (97006155)

The room we were given was just as the previous occupants had left it, so we were given an upgrade, which was a nice room.

To get to your rooms, you needed to go outside the building and some of the stairs were very steep.

  • 5/10 Harold (Group of adult friends)

from Southampton , GB on  January 16, 2008

"Generally the stay was fine for overnight but not for an extended stay. Our particular room was fine but for others in our party, there were a few problems. It would be helpful if the hotel had a few more rooms on the ground floor for the less mobile as one of our party had limited walking and was given a room at the top of a very winding staircase. Staffing could have been better as, on our arrival, there was one person on reception who was also manning the main bar. Breakfast was quite nice and the continental breakfast was included in the room price, but a cooked breakfast had to be paid for separately." (97416974)

Rooms were very warm and cosy. Bathroom was quite big and lots of room to move around.

Staff did not seem to know what they were doing. Gave wrong room to one couple which meant they had to pay more than they were quoted. One of the rooms was not ready on our arrival.

Location; easy to get to from the Channel Tunnel and easy to get into London from it. Friendly staff and friendly atmosphere to the place as a whole. Good size, clean rooms for a very reasonable price. Nice bar, tv lounge and restaurant area.

Very loud creaking floorboards in the room above were very annoying. So much so that I will not come back to the hotel other than to rooms with no people upstairs.
