"A+++ stay and value for money." (108090171)
Helpfull staff, warm welcome, good sized room which was very clean.Excellant breakfast with a good selection of foods on offer.
No towels in room, a minor point which was quickley resolved once reported. Would only have beeen a problem had I not noticed before my shower.

I have checked the poor box for value for money. This is not a reflection of the hotel itself, more a generalisation of rip-off Britain. I can stay in a 4star hotel on the Costas for £30 per room and enjoy facilities such as swimming pool, day and evening entertainment etc.

Friendly, clean and easy to find. Also, as the hotel is on a main road, I was surprised at how quiet my room was. Compared with other accommodation in York I thought it was reasonably priced.
A bit cramped, and the facilities would benefit from some updating.

"A group of us stayed and experienced a clean well organised hotel with friendly and helpful staff, in a good location with parking and a lovely garden area. The rooms and their bathrooms vary in size, some tiny and cramped. Attic bedrooms suffer from water system noise. The more expensive rooms are excellent." (97950876)
location, parking, good sitting room, willingness of staff to help, friendlyness of staff, garden area.
Hardness of bed, some rooms were cramped in size, some rooms have tiny bathrooms, the attic room suffers noise from the water system.

"Great welcome. We arrived mid evening due to traffic problems, rooms where available and great. Great breakfast service, and close to the British Rail Museum, our reason for visiting York. My wife and I stayed at another York hotel last year (the Elmbank), and based on that we had considered skipping York this trip. To a chance and booked the Holgate Hill, and couldn't have been happier. Well be back to York again, and it will be at the Holgate Hill." (97953783)

"A comfortable, traditional hotel, very clean room and bathroom. Bed was on the hard side and pillows not very comfy but this is personal taste. Handy for York centre with a bus stop immediately outside. Car park was small and busy." (97723141)
Hotel warm, comfortable lounge, good food.

"The rooms are old and bit out of date, but are clean and have all the main comforts that you expect. They have a very good breakfast menu that is inculded and a nice big breakfast room. The staff really do their best and I thought they were excellent. There is limited parking so at times you have to double park which means you may get trapped behind someoneelses car. But overall it was a great deal for the price." (97636216)
I had an enjoyable stay, the staff were excellent and really tried to cater for all your needs.

Plenty of breakfast options at the breakfast bar. The cooked food was served very quickly.
We were in a room by the garden and the outside wall light shone all night, which kept me awake.

"This is a good value hotel, breakfast was served hot and the choice very good. The service given by all the staff was warm and friendly. It was a good choice for location so close to the centre of York without the noise. Parking is a case of organised park next to or behind where you can, but it did work and we had no problem, you were at least off the road and secure. We would strongly recommend the evening meal very good value and delicious. Would go again but would insist on a different room, our room was at the back of the hotel, groundfloor with very low ceiling, above us we had insomniacs who had TV loud from 4 am their walking around and taking baths kept us awake. Our room was well serviced, very clean, fluffy white towels soaps etc." (97162773)
The location is ideal just a short walk into the center of York. Food excellent and a real family atmosphere.
The room we stayed in was a little dated and we were not too keen on the low ceiling.

"We enjoyed our brief overnight stay, we were comfortably accommodated but would have liked (on the web site) to have known of the choice of rooms when we might have preferred a more superior room, we well fed at both meals and we will stay there again. The hotel is well placed maybe 10-15 minutes walk from the centre of York, I am slightly disabled and had no difficulty with the walking, and with it's own parking is very convenient all round" (97488454)
The interior of the hotel is warm and very welcoming, all the staff are very friendly but not intrusive and the food and service much better than expected. Our room was spotlessly clean and quite comfortable
The bedroom furnishings whilst clean are a little tired and there are the remains of old communications/entertainment systems behind the headboard, the TV was ancient and manual only

"We were greeted in the car park and, as it was full, were advised on the best place to park so that guests leaving early in the morning could move their cars without us having to be disturbed. Check-in was really quick and friendly and although the restaurant had already closed, we were offered a choice from the menu and also time to settle into our room before eating. The meal was delicious and veggies perfectly cooked. Breakfast was tasty and there was plenty of choice. On the next evening, the staff attempted to contact the theatre booking office for us and then gave us transport and sightseeing advice. Upon our return to the hotel, we were greeted and offered the opportunity of having a drink from the bar, as it was just closing, or a coffee and the offer was also made to re-open the lounge area for us. Sunday breakfast was busier than the previous morning but the staff were extremely efficient and again, friendly." (97149668)
The hotel was full of charm and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful
The room looked a little tired

"Because I requested a ground floor, the 13 steps down should have been mentioned. Ovrerall we enjoyed our stay." (97152289)
Quiet,comfortable,friendly,excellent breakfast service.
Car parking needs organising,I asked about steps for the 2nd room, and was told about 3 steps up. no mention was made of the 13 steps down to room 1A, albeit your staff assisted greatly with side door. Room 2 bathroom has a dangerous shower arrangement. Much care is needed to adjust water temperature.

"It was cold as the temperature had dipped - 1 degree C at night, as forecasted, but there was no heat on all day. I was so cold in bed I was curled up in foetal position and covered in goosebumps...kept waking...in extension block on the front. Main road traffic noise. Room nice and big but, draughty, casement windows. Water scalding hot in shower and bath. Not easy to operate...positively dangerous trying to work out the shower. Plenty of tea and coffee provided with the tray in room. Ladies at check-in desk invariably on phone for lengthy periods while we waited for attention. But very pleasant." (97034193)
Convenient for city. Parking. Breakfast. Helpful friendly waitress at breakfast.
Decor a bit dated and shabby.

"It was adequate but not pleasurable" (97981742)
Staff friendly; obliging service in dining room; food quite good.
Room suffered from rising damp - plaster crumbling - two light bulbs burned out - dampness in extra knitted throw (blanket) - paper bath-mat - two tiny chairs unsuitable for us to sit upon - we kept the ground floor window closed all night for security since there was nothing to prevent entrance from street
